Vitiligo: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

What is the treatment?

Vitiligo is a disease caused by the loss of skin melanocytes in certain areas of the body. Patients suffering from this disease are seen with white patches at any place of the body. Vitiligo is localized and focal in one area or it can be found in different areas on the body.

Vitiligo Causes

Although the exact cause for this skin disintegration is still unknown, it is believed that the disease occurs when a patient's immune system accidentally attacks and destroys some cells within its body. Therefore this disease arises from an autoimmune condition in the patient's body. Usually the disease develops before the age of 40, and half of them develop the condition before their 20s. Experts say the disease may have a genetic component, as it has been observed that vitiligo plays on family members. However, experts on this disease also believe that vitiligo can be caused by related medical conditions, like thyroid gland dysfunction.

Vitiligo Symptoms

Although patients with vitiligo often suffer from emotional and psychological distress, the disease itself is painless and has no significant health consequences. It has been observed that there is no way by which doctors can predict that this disintegration of the skin will be confined in one place or spread throughout the patient's body. Vitiligo patches are more common in areas on the body that are exposed to the sun. It appears mostly on the feet, face, hands and lips. However, it also surfaces in areas near the patient's navel, armpits and groin, genitals and rectal area.

Vitiligo Treatment

Currently, there are many options for treating this disease and most of these treatments are aimed at restoring the natural color of the patient's skin. Medical treatment for vitiligo includes taking oral medications, exposing the skin to ultraviolet radiation, or using medicinal fairness creams. Although this is a rare procedure, skin grafting from the patient's tissue is also performed under certain circumstances. Many people suffering from this embarrassing disease have found that cosmetic products to cover their white patches help to feel better. For this, the patient suffering from this disease needs to try many brands of concealing cosmetics before finding the right product that matches the need.
